Our VAT & Compliance Services

01

VAT Registration & Scheme Choice

We register your business at the right time and on the right scheme — standard, flat rate, cash accounting or annual accounting — chosen on your actual numbers, not by default. Register too late and HMRC backdates your liability with penalties; pick the wrong scheme and you overpay for years. We make sure neither happens.

02

Making Tax Digital (MTD) Setup

Every VAT-registered business must keep digital records and file through MTD-compatible software. We set up and manage the whole system in Sage or QuickBooks — digital record-keeping, direct HMRC filing links and clean data — so you are fully compliant without ever wrestling with the software yourself.

03

Quarterly VAT Returns

We prepare, check and file your VAT return every quarter — reconciling your records, catching input VAT you have missed, applying the correct treatment to tricky items (vehicles, entertainment, imports), and submitting to HMRC on time, every time. You get a clear summary of what you owe and why, before anything is filed.

04

VAT Health Check & Scheme Review

Already registered? Many businesses sit on the wrong VAT scheme for years and quietly overpay. We review your current scheme, your last four returns and your sector's rules, then tell you in plain English whether you are paying the right amount — and exactly what changing scheme would save.

05

HMRC Correspondence & Inspections

VAT queries, compliance checks and inspection letters land on our desk, not yours. We respond to HMRC on your behalf, prepare the records they ask for, and manage the process end-to-end — keeping you informed without you ever drafting a reply.

06

International & E-commerce VAT

Selling abroad or online? We handle the VAT treatment of imports and exports, postponed VAT accounting, EU sales, and marketplace rules for platforms like Amazon and eBay — so cross-border trade does not create compliance surprises.

07

Voluntary Registration & Deregistration

Below the £90,000 threshold? Voluntary registration sometimes saves real money — reclaiming input VAT while adding credibility with business customers. Winding down or restructuring? We manage deregistration cleanly. Either way, we run your numbers first and recommend what actually benefits you.

08

Year-Round VAT Advice

Pricing a big contract? Buying a van? Invoicing a client in Ireland? VAT questions do not wait for quarter-end, and neither do we. Ask anything, any time — plain-English answers within 24hr from an ACCA-supervised accountant who knows your business.

Your VAT Questions Answered

You must register when your taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period — measured continuously, not by accounting year, which is what catches most businesses out. You must also register if you expect to pass the threshold in the next 30 days alone. Register late and HMRC backdates your VAT liability and adds penalties. If you are approaching £85,000–£90,000, talk to us now — timing the registration properly can save real money.

Making Tax Digital is HMRC's requirement that all VAT-registered businesses keep digital records and submit VAT returns through compatible software — manual returns through the HMRC website are no longer allowed, and a points-based penalty system applies for non-compliance. We set up MTD-compatible software (Sage or QuickBooks), migrate your records, and file every return through it — you stay compliant without touching the software.

It depends on your turnover, cost profile and cash flow. The flat rate scheme suits many service businesses with few costs. Cash accounting helps if customers pay slowly — you only pay VAT when you are actually paid. Annual accounting reduces filings to one per year with instalments. The standard scheme suits businesses reclaiming significant input VAT. We review your actual numbers and recommend the scheme that leaves you better off — many businesses have never had this checked.

Sometimes, yes. Voluntary registration lets you reclaim VAT on purchases and equipment, and adds credibility when selling to VAT-registered business customers, who reclaim the VAT you charge anyway. But if your customers are mainly the public, registering makes you 20% more expensive or cuts your margin. We run both scenarios with your real numbers before recommending either way.

HMRC runs a points-based penalty system: each late return earns a point, and at the threshold you receive a £200 penalty — plus a further £200 for every subsequent late return. Late payment adds interest and escalating percentage-based penalties the longer the debt sits. One missed quarter can cost more than a year of proper support — which is why our clients have had £0 in surprise penalties.

Generally yes — input VAT on goods and services used for your business is reclaimed through your return, and you can often reclaim VAT on purchases made before registration (up to 4 years for goods you still hold, 6 months for services). Special rules apply to cars, fuel, entertainment and mixed business/personal use. We make sure you reclaim everything you are entitled to — and nothing you are not.

Yes — and you will not miss a deadline in between. We handle the whole handover: professional clearance with your current accountant, transferring records, reviewing your recent returns and scheme choice as we onboard, and picking up the next filing seamlessly. Switching is far less hassle than most owners expect.

A fixed monthly or quarterly fee agreed in writing before we start — based on your transaction volume and complexity, never a surprise invoice afterwards.
